Marketing versus experiential marketing

I used to hate the idea that I was in marketing Even after having worked for over fifteen years in jobs where the focus was heavily on communication, I never considered myself to be “in marketing.” In fact, I didn’t like to be associated with anything that involved marketing… until I started my own business. Why tell a story

Storytelling opens the heart. When a story is told with honesty and shares the good and bad parts of a life, the heartbreak and sorrow, the joy and wonder, the lessons learned and things lost, something happens. We become more human and we see others as more human, too. …I often think about when I began to become deeply aware of the power of stories.

When life throws you lemons

It takes courage to share something difficult in your life for the purpose of inspiring others. As hard as it is to talk about this stuff or write about it, I can’t NOT create something from this life I’ve lived. What I have learned from all this is that you can’t control what life throws at you. Sometimes it’s lemons over and over. But you can either let the difficult parts of life that drum up painful emotions break you down, or you can use them to build yourself up. I’m learning to make lemonade from the lemons.

Why I write

Since around age 10, I wanted to be a writer. Even so, I thought I had nothing of interest to write about (which, of course, wasn't true). Rather than share my writing, I kept it all in diaries (journals). After returning to the US from a nine-year experience of living in Europe (in a tiny country called The Netherlands), I went to college and then grad school to earn degrees in English and Creative Writing. I still doubted myself as a writer.
